Mumbai Experiences is hiring full-time and part-time tour guides to lead ethical, community-first walking tours of Dharavi and Mumbai.

About the role

Since 2012, Mumbai Experiences has run tours of Dharavi that show the neighbourhood as it really is: a place of work, craft, family and enterprise, not a spectacle. We are based in Kumbhar Wada, Dharavi, and our tours are built with and for the community.

As a tour guide, you will lead small groups of international and Indian guests through Dharavi and around Mumbai. You will be the face of the company: telling the area's stories with respect, keeping guests safe and comfortable, and making sure residents are treated with dignity at every stop.

Responsibilities

• Lead daily walking tours of Dharavi (recycling units, pottery in Kumbhar Wada, leather and textile workshops, residential lanes)

• Lead city tours and other experiences as scheduled

• Meet guests at the pickup point on time, brief them on the route, dress code and photography rules

• Explain local history, industry and daily life clearly and accurately in English

• Follow our ethical guidelines: no photos of residents without consent, no intrusion into homes, respect for workers' time

• Keep groups together and safe in busy lanes and on local trains or taxis

• Build good relationships with workshop owners, families and community partners on the route

• Answer guest questions before and after the tour, and ask happy guests for reviews

• Report any incident, complaint or feedback to the team the same day

• Help with bookings, WhatsApp enquiries and social media content when there are no tours

Requirements

Must have

• Fluent spoken English; Hindi and Marathi

• Good knowledge of Mumbai, and a real interest in Dharavi's people and history

• Friendly, patient and confident speaking to groups of 2 to 15 people

• Respectful attitude towards the community and a commitment to ethical tourism

• Comfortable walking 2 to 4 hours a day in heat and monsoon

• Punctual and reliable, including early mornings and weekends

• A smartphone with WhatsApp

Nice to have

• Grew up in or has close ties to Dharavi

• Previous guiding, hospitality or customer-facing experience

• A third foreign language (French, German, Spanish or similar)

• First aid training

• Comfortable on camera for short reels and videos

Working days

Full-time: 6 days a week including weekends, with a weekday off. Part-time: flexible days, weekends preferred

Salary

₹8,000 to ₹18,000 per month, based on experience and full-time or part-time hours, plus incentives and guest tips (around ₹20,000 per month)

Paid on-the-job training with our senior guides before you lead tours alone

Growth

Chance to lead new tours, train new guides and grow with the company

You will join a small, close team that has been doing this work for over 14 years.
