Job Description
Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Ambulance EMT ensures safe, efficient, and professional during transport of patients. Key elements outlined in Indian and international SOPs including the following: 1. Pre-Shift Preparation • Report on time and be fit for duty. • Wear complete uniform, ID badge, and PPE. • Check oxygen, stretcher, medical equipment, medicines, and ambulance readiness. • Complete the pre-shift checklist before starting duty. 2. Professional Appearance and Conduct • Maintain a clean and professional appearance. • Follow personal hygiene and infection prevention practices. • Protect patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality. • Avoid tobacco, alcohol, or any activity that may impair professional performance while on duty. 3. Attendance and Availability • Report on time for every assigned shift. • Inform the supervisor immediately in case of delay, illness, or absence. 4. Responding to Calls • Acknowledge dispatch immediately. • Coordinate effectively with the ambulance pilot and dispatch center. • Ensure scene safety before approaching the patient. Patient Assessment • Perform a Primary Survey (Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Exposure). • Identify and manage life-threatening conditions. • Obtain patient history and perform a secondary assessment. • Record baseline vital signs. 6. Patient Monitoring During Transport • Continuously monitor vital signs and patient condition. • Observe airway, breathing, circulation, and consciousness. • Monitor critical patients every 5 minutes and stable patients every 15 minutes. • Inform the receiving hospital of any deterioration. 7. Documentation & Handover • Complete the Patient Care Record (PCR) accurately. • Record assessment, treatment, vital signs, and transport details. • Ensure documentation is complete, factual, and confidential. 8. Post-Transport Duties • Clean and disinfect the ambulance, restock supplies, replace oxygen. • Prepare the ambulance for the next emergency call.
