Job Description
A CNC Operator sets up and runs computer-controlled machines that cut, shape, or drill materials such as metal, plastic, or wood.
Typical responsibilities
- Read work orders, blueprints, and technical drawings.
- Load materials and secure them in the machine.
- Select or load the correct CNC program and tools.
- Start machines and monitor operations for safe, accurate production.
- Measure finished parts with gauges or other inspection tools.
- Make basic adjustments and report machine or quality issues.
- Keep the work area clean and follow safety procedures.
Common qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic math and measurement skills.
- Ability to read technical drawings and use measuring tools.
- Attention to detail and willingness to work safely.
- CNC or manufacturing experience may be preferred; some employers provide training.
Work environment: Usually a manufacturing shop, often involving standing for long periods, protective equipment, and shift work.
