Nursing Staff – B.Sc. Nursing / GNM

 

1. Position Details

Designation: Staff Nurse / Nursing Staff

Qualification: B.Sc. Nursing / GNM

Department: Nursing / Patient Care

Employment Type: Full-Time / Shift Duty

2. Job Purpose

To provide safe, compassionate and quality nursing care to patients as per hospital policies, nursing standards and instructions of the treating doctors. The Nursing Staff is responsible for patient monitoring, medication administration, clinical procedures, documentation, infection control and coordination with the healthcare team.

 

3. Key Responsibilities

 

A. Patient Care

  • Provide nursing care to patients according to their condition and treatment plan.
  • Receive and assess patients during admission and shift handover.
  • Monitor vital signs such as temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration and SpO₂.
  • Observe patients for changes in condition and immediately report abnormalities to the doctor / Nursing In-charge.
  • Assist patients with personal care, mobility, feeding and other basic needs as required.
  • Maintain patient comfort, dignity and privacy.
  • Assist doctors during examinations, procedures and treatments.
  • Provide appropriate care to patients before and after procedures and surgeries.

 

B. Medication & Treatment

  • Administer medicines strictly as prescribed by the doctor and according to hospital policy.
  • Verify the correct patient, medicine, dose, route and timing before administration.
  • Maintain proper records of medication administration.
  • Monitor patients for adverse reactions and report immediately.
  • Administer injections, IV medications, IV fluids and other treatments within the scope of professional practice and hospital policy.
  • Ensure proper care and monitoring of IV lines, catheters, drains and other devices as applicable.

 

C. Clinical Procedures

  • Perform nursing procedures according to approved hospital SOPs.
  • Assist in wound dressing, specimen collection and other clinical procedures as assigned.
  • Maintain aseptic technique during procedures.
  • Ensure proper preparation of patients for investigations, procedures and surgery.
  • Assist in emergency situations and follow hospital emergency protocols.

 

D. Patient Monitoring & Safety

  • Continuously monitor patients according to their clinical condition.
  • Identify and report deterioration in the patient's condition immediately.
  • Maintain patient safety and take preventive measures against falls and other risks.
  • Ensure proper identification of patients before medication, procedures and investigations.
  • Follow emergency response procedures when required.
  • Report incidents, medication errors, falls or other adverse events immediately.

 

E. Documentation & Records

  • Maintain accurate and timely nursing records.
  • Record vital signs, medication, treatment, procedures and patient observations.
  • Maintain nursing care plans and other required documentation.
  • Complete shift handover properly and communicate important patient information to the incoming staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and hospital information.

 

F. Infection Control

  • Follow hospital infection-control policies and procedures.
  • Perform proper hand hygiene before and after patient contact.
  • Use PPE appropriately.
  • Follow standard precautions and isolation precautions wherever required.
  • Ensure proper disposal and segregation of biomedical waste.
  • Maintain cleanliness and aseptic conditions during nursing procedures.

 

G. Coordination & Communication

  • Coordinate with doctors, Nursing In-charge, PCA staff, housekeeping and other hospital departments.
  • Communicate professionally with patients and their attendants.
  • Explain basic nursing procedures and care instructions to patients/attendants as directed.
  • Escalate patient complaints and clinical concerns to the appropriate authority.
  • Participate in shift handovers and departmental meetings.

 

4. Professional Responsibilities

  • Follow hospital policies, nursing protocols, SOPs and code of conduct.
  • Maintain professional ethics and patient confidentiality.
  • Maintain punctuality, discipline and proper uniform.
  • Keep nursing equipment and work areas clean and organized.
  • Attend mandatory training, competency assessments and continuing education programs.
  • Support hospital quality initiatives and applicable NABH standards.
  • Perform duties assigned by the Nursing In-charge / Nursing Superintendent.

 

5. Required Skills

  • Good clinical and nursing skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to handle emergency and critical situations calmly.
  • Good observation and decision-making skills.
  • Basic computer and hospital information system knowledge.
  • Ability to work in rotational shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays.

 

6. Qualification & Experience

  • B.Sc. Nursing or GNM (General Nursing & Midwifery) from a recognized institution.
  • Valid registration with the applicable State Nursing Council.
  • Relevant hospital experience preferred.
  • Freshers may be considered depending on hospital requirements.

 

7. Performance Parameters / KPIs

  • Quality and safety of patient care.
  • Accuracy of medication administration.
  • Proper patient monitoring and timely escalation.
  • Accuracy and completeness of nursing documentation.
  • Compliance with infection-control practices.
  • Compliance with hospital SOPs and nursing protocols.

  • Attendance, punctuality and discipline.
  • Participation in training and competency programs.
  • Effective communication and coordination with the healthcare team.
